  • RHS GRADUATION RATE JUMPS 6%; OTHER SCHOOLS SHOW IMPROVEMENT

    doe
(Indianapolis, IN)–The Indiana Department of Education released graduation rates for the Class of 2013 Wednesday.  For Richmond, the results were very good.  Richmond’s graduation rate rose to 86.6%, which is still slightly below the state average but is a six-point increase over the class of 2012.  Back in 2005, Richmond was labeled a dropout factory with a graduation rate of just 53%.  The state rate was 88.6%.  Most area schools were above that, and most area schools showed improvement over the Class of 2012.  The highest rate in our area was Monroe Central at 96.9%.  Other schools above 90% include Centerville, Northeastern, Union County, Franklin County, and Randolph Southern.  Richmond no longer has the area’s lowest graduation rate.  That dubious distinction now belongs to Winchester High School with a rate of 81.8%.  Winchester also had the biggest drop, down 9.4%  The school that made the most improvement was Randolph Southern, up more than 12 points to 91.7%.  Here are the graduation rates for each area school.  Rates for 2013 are listed first with 2012 rates following:  Richmond (86.6, 80.3), Centerville (92.6, 91.5), Northeastern (92.3, 91), Lincoln (82.4, 83.5), Hagerstown (88.3, 90.2), Union County (90.5, 91.6), Connersville (88.9, 92.1), Franklin County (91.5, 83.1), Union City (83.8, 88.7), Winchester (81.8, 91.2), Randolph Southern (91.7, 79.4), Monroe Central (96.9, 97.6).

  • GAS LEAK FORCES EVACUATION OF SCHOOL, NEIGHBORHOOD

    ps camden
(Camden, OH)–A gas leak forced the evacuation of the Camden Primary School in Preble County Wednesday.  Construction workers who were building a playground struck a gas line.  Students were evacuated to a nearby church.  Homes within an eighth of a mile were also evacuated.  “The neighborhood definitely understood.  They pretty much packed up what they needed and left the area until we gave them the all-clear to come back,” said Jared Wiley with the Camden Fire Department.  The leak was contained after three hours of repairs.

  • COMMUNITY GATHERING SET AFTER RECENT SHOOTINGS

(Richmond, IN)–A community gathering has been set for Saturday in response to recent shootings in Richmond.  Six people have been shot, including one fatally, in three separate incidents in the last two weeks.  Police have not said if they feel the incidents are connected.  The meeting is set for noon at New Beginnings of Life Ministries on North West H.  That’s near where the fatal shooting occurred.

  • LOCAL SWIFTY GAS STATIONS CLOSING

    swifty
(Richmond, IN)–Wednesday is the last day for the Swifty gas station on National Road West in Richmond.  One employee said Wednesday that the store may reopen under different ownership and with a new name.  Two Swifty stations in Connersville closed Tuesday night, although one is expected to re-open as a Conoco station.  A New Castle Swifty closed Monday.  An attendant at the Swifty on U.S. 40 in New Paris said that location had no plans to close.  The closures are tied to the founder’s death last summer.
